Supplements to Consider

Berberine, from Dr. Whitaker, choice of various formulations (I use the Berberine Gluco Defense® version, because it includes the cinnamon I previously purchased separately.)

I pay about $24 for a month’s supply by ordering about seven months’ worth at a time (I buy 5, get 2 free.)

Gluco-Science from Source Naturals

from Sunshine Natural Food & Vitamins

I pay about $33 for a month’s supply, usually order 2 or 3 bottles at a time to save on shipping

Snacks I eat

Of course, in the past year and a half I’ve found all sorts of things to eat that don’t spike my blood sugar. Most of these are available in grocery stores, especially around the outside aisles (stay away from almost everything in the middle of almost every grocery store!).

This is not an exhaustive list, nor does it include what to eat at breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are lots of sources for that info. I’ll add more if I hear interest.

  • Hard-boiled eggs – easy, quick. Tasty alone or spiced up with Mrs. Dash, or Tapatio, or even just salt & pepper.
  • Jerky – beef, chicken, salmon. Some are hard to find. All tend to be pricey.
  • Crudités – the fancy way to say sliced vegetables. You can dip ‘em, too.
  • Apples – remember apples?
  • Almonds
  • Butter – almond, peanut, by itself or with crackers and veggies
  • Hummus – with a couple of crackers or, better, veggies.
  • Cheese – usually string cheese (mozzarella)
  • Exo Protein Bars – Protein bars made from crickets! Yep! Here’s what Tim Ferriss says about them:

“Insect protein is the protein of the future, and Exo is leading the charge. When I need clean and fast protein without an insulin coma, these are the bars that I grab.”

Just $9.99 for a sample pack of 4 (Cocoa Nut, Apple Cinnamon, Blueberry Vanilla and Banana Bread) – if you use this link: http://mbsy.co/exoprotein/26796807

Books You Should Read

There are three books that, if they were the only thing I could read about diabetes and managing my own health, would be sufficient.

Reversing Diabetes, by Julian Whitaker, MD

Younger Next Year, a book whose subtitle is “Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy – Until You’re 80 and Beyond”

Normally I wouldn’t argue publicly with a fellow Harvardian, especially one with a law degree. But I take issue with the unnecessary comma after the word “Fit” in the book’s subtitle. My other complaint is the lack of an index. Otherwise the book’s fun to read, immensely useful.

If you’re a man, buy this book:

For a woman, this book which, inexplicably, is priced at even less than the man’s version:

Wellness Uprising, by Rob Pell
